If more than one player is tied to be Oregon’s representative at National Tournament of Champions (Haring, Irwin), the representative will be determined by a playoff. The playoff system is based on the 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament Playoffs. The playoff will consist of one to three stages.
Stage 1:
If there are two players tied, they will play a match of two rapid games (15 min + 10 sec).
In case of a 3-6 way tie, the players will compete in a round-robin rapid tournament (15 min + 10 sec).
If more than 7 players are tied, the round-robin rapid tournament will be at a slightly faster time control (10 min + 5 sec).
Stage 2:
If there are two players remaining after Stage 1, they will play a match of two blitz games (3 min + 2 sec).
In case of a 3 or more players remaining after Stage 1, the players will compete in a round-robin blitz tournament (3 min + 2 sec).
Stage 3:
If there are still two or more remaining players, either knockout match or knockout tournament will be played. Each match consists of a single blitz game (3 min + 2 sec). The colors are determined by drawing of lots. In case of a draw, another game will be played with the colors reversed. If there is another draw, the opponents will play until the decisive outcome. If there are three or more players remaining, requiring a knockout tournament, the seedings will be by rating and the pairings will be high against low, like the NCAA basketball tournament. Examples:
If 4 players remain, the first-round matches are (1 – 4) and (2 – 3), with the winners meeting in the final match.
If 3 players remain, the first-round match is (2 – 3), and the 1 seed gets a bye into the final match.
