Oregon beats Washington 9-7 in Round 2 of the States Cup

Oregon lead 8-4 after the first three cycles, but Washington rallied in the 4th cycle. Matt Zavortink saved the match by winning his 4th game as well as his other three.

I was unable to watch Matt’s games because I played this round. So I assumed that he was applying his formula of

  • Get a positional advantage
  • Watch his opponents burn clock defending
  • Finish them off in their time trouble

Imagine my surprise when I looked over his games and discovered he has a new formula of

  • Create a chaotic position
  • Get into time trouble himself trying to navigate the chaos
  • Win the ensuing time scramble

For an example of this new formula, check out Matt’s game against Rushaan Mahajan.

Feel free to apply Matt's formula, but as we PNW folks know, Safety Not Guaranteed.

Washington's comeback was initiated by Derek Zhang. He used less than 5 minutes off his clock to complete his kingside mating attack.

No match next week. The next match is scheduled for July 12.
