Team Oregon Wins the Under 1900 Prize at the Tournaments of State Champions

Team Oregon
Hayul Lim, Zoey Tang, and Ishaan Kodarapu accept Oregon’s Under 1900 team championship award.

Team Oregon finished tied for 10th out of 51 states in the “State vs. State” competition at the Tournaments of State Champions. The US Chess Federation runs the Denker, Haring, Barber, Rockefeller, and Irwin Championships at the same time every year, and totals the points across the 5 championships to produce the overall state winner. Eleventh place is a great result for a state that ranks 27th by population, but Oregon also won the prize for the top team with an average rating under 1900. All the teams that finished ahead of Oregon had an average rating of at least 100 points higher.

All players from team Oregon players had outstanding results.

Zoey Tang tied for second place in the Haring tournament.

Jim Tarjan tied for 3rd in the Irwin, and won the over-70 prize.

Ishaan Kodarapu scored three and a half points in the Barber, which included a draw with a master.

Calvin Chang scored 3 points in the Denker in spite of being paired up every round. His wins over an expert and two A-players gained him over 100 rating points.

Hayul Lim scored 2.5 points in the Rockefeller, including a win over a player rated 277 points higher and a draw against a player rated 478 points higher.

Every player brought rating points back to Oregon. Whether they will share them with the rest of us is another story 😊
